JD grinned, seeming to elicit a warm response from the girl in armor. "No problem." At her question, he looked her over, then said, "Pretty good. But if your weapons are as real as they look, then I say your chances are even better! Just be careful, this is a monster boy convention after all." He winked. "Some of em might take those weapons as a challenge!"
JD turned at the new question from the tall man in the alligator hoodie. There was an odd air about him, but JD wasn't one to get caught up on such things. At the question he said, "Sure am! Need one? I got movie parodies. Video game stuff. You can have a sample if ya like. Just make sure people know where you got it!"

"Why thank you. Seems to me like I've got most of the females here pretty beat." Artemis laughed at his comment about it probably being a challenge. "Well what's a good monster story without the monster slayer? Dracula's nothing without Dr. Van Helsing. The Dragon would just get bored if St. George didn't show up. And heck Grendal without Beowulf is just a snorefest. Besides I know how to watch out for myself." She winked back and resumed flipping through the magazines.

"Very interesting. I might take more than one," he said.
"As for the costume contest," he interjected turning to the heroine, "I think you may have the best costume in the house. Not that I'm one to talk." Being that the more realistic monster costumes... weren't, and would be disqualified by a fair judge. Giles could have put together a better costume, but he had no interest in winning the contest.
Although he had been tempted to wear a tiger hoodie for irony's sake, but he decided against the false advertising.

"Good point" he said to the girl. "The villain is only as good as the hero he's trying to overpower. Of course," he grinned his somewhat crooked smile at the warrior, "the hero's only interesting if there's a real danger of being wolfed down, right? Grendel has to be ready to gnash, Dracula to bite, the Dragon to snap at anytime. We only like Beowulf cause he was the first one not to end up in a mere-monster's stomach. Got to keep that in mind if you're going to dress as a warrior."
He bounced excitedly at the possibility of someone taking more than one zine. "Sure! Ya'll folks come by anytime. I've got plenty at the booth. Right over there." He pointed to his "booth," the small table with the simple board sign in front. A passing costume knocked the sign over and JD rolled his eyes, walking over to straighten it, grumbling.

Artemis smirked. "Why thank you. But I'm not quite sure about that. I've seen several monster costumes that are practically real." She wasn't quite sure why she was feeling more at ease with these two, maybe it was their friendly, dorky demeanor, or maybe it was the shot of whiskey she had earlier. Either way she found it much easier to hide her true purpose in friendly banter.
"Skill is important, but the right weapon is just as essential. After all without the vorpal sword to snicker snack the Jabberwock would probably still be knocking about. And this swordmaiden is armed to the teeth." She grinned fiercely while keeping up her playful demeanor, however there was a bit of a spark in her eyes, as if she wasn't entirely joking.

Thump. Thump. Thump.
The two-meter tall Brand strode into the Artist Alley, wearing his full "Dragon Knight" regalia. His plate armor was made out of silver-and-steel painted plastic plates designed to resemble the scales of a dragon, with a long purple cape attached to the back of his oversized shoulder plates and an animatronic tail that weaved languidly behind him as he walked. His helmet resembled a horned dragon's head, of course, and he wore a draconian muzzle to complete the illusion that he was a dragon walking around in armor. In his hand he carried an elaborately decorous spear that wouldn't look out of place in any given fantasy anime. He even wore obvious lenses to give his eyes a reptilian appearance. Under the costume, though, Brand maintained his human guise. No point in alarming the prey.
He seemed unable to walk more than a few steps without someone wanting to get a picture of him, a task that he accomplished with a cheerful demeanor and a watchful eye. He was causally cataloging the potential prey that was milling about, and taking note of potentially preferred targets. As he posed for another picture, his tail accidentally brushed a nearby sign, causing him to turn.
"Sorry," he rumbled to JD.

The "costume" that knocked over his sign was the tail of a very tall, very heavily dressed dragon in full armor. JD couldn't exactly fault the guy for tipping over a sign or two. He was pretty huge! Plus, he kept turning to take pictures, which meant his tail would fan out from time to time. Being another reptile, JD felt a bit of kinship towards the dragon.
He righted his sign and said with a grin, "Hey, no problem! Nice outfit, man." He pointed at the girl in full armor, a small knight for a large dragon. "Just be careful around here. We've a knight who knows a thing or two about hunting dragons." He winked and restocked his supply of zines to hand out to folks in the alley.

"Impressive," Giles mumbled, while thinking to himself that this other dragon might be overdoing things.
That said, it did seem worthwhile to take a picture. He dig out a cutting-edge smartphone from his coat pocket and readied its photography functionality.
"Maybe I can take a picture of the fight later," he joked, "...Come to think of it, there's no way I'd be the only one to try."

Brand turned again and looked at the girl and her small armory. He raised his eyebrows playfully.
"Does she now?" he said. "Well then, I'll watch my step a little more carefully."
His eyes flickered over Artemis's arsenal. Some looked like prop weapons, but he began to suspect that at least a few of her tools might be real. The sword certainly looked like it had some genuine heft to it. That opened up all kinds of possibilities...worth exploring later. For now Brand was happy to play the part of an enthusiastic cosplayer. He bowed to the warrior-girl as deeply as his armor could allow. Then he struck a pose with his spear held at the ready.

Artemis smirked at the "dragon knight". "Aye that she does. But she doesn't exactly fight fair. And I wouldn't say she's exactly a knight."
To be honest this posing was making her feel like she was uncomfortably close to breaking her cover. But ironically she had to play along to keep her cover intact. After all she was technically a cosplayer, which means she had to stay in character, which meant replying to the challenge. She returned the bow and stepped back, reaching for her sword.

"Ha!" Brand exclaimed as she accepted the challenge. He whirled the ostentatious spear with an easy flourish as he squared off against the little woman. They'd probably only get a few swings in before the con staff noticed and intervened but Brand wanted to play a bit...and get the measure of this determined-looking young woman. He deliberately let himself move a little slower than he might have, ostensibly because of his armor.
He lunged, a single quick probing attack and deliberately overbalanced himself a little. He wanted to see how fast she took advantage of a weakness.

Artemis drew her sword with a flourish, twirling it once around her hand with practiced ease and grace. She sidestepped the jab and closed the distance, bringing the point of her sword an inch in front of his neck. "Dead." She declared sweetly before backing away and bowing. She then grinned at Brand, holding her sword at the ready, in case the dragon knight wanted a second round.

"Well that wasn't much of a show for the crowd," Brand said as he stepped back. "But fair enough. I think you have some real skill there. I can't imagine where you might have picked it up, though. S.C.A. perhaps?"
He gave her a grin, though it was mostly hidden by the fake muzzle he wore.

"Oh here and there." She replied with a smirk, twirling her sword again before holding it out so Brand could tap it with the spear and signal that he was ready.

Brand took his stance again and rapped his spear against her sword. This time he waited, holding hos weapon defensively and waiting for Artemis to attack.
