Beatrix strode into the ball with as much elegance and as little waddle as she could muster. A fancy looking gold dress shimmered down over the soon to be mother's body, the swell of her belly causing the silky fabric to curve over her and spill down like a waterfall. She wore a tiara on her head to complete the 'cosplay' that she had rented for the occasion. After all, if she couldn't drink then the second best place to flirt was at a ball. She began to circle the dance floor as carefully as she could to hide the struggle she was having with her weight and maintain her air of elegance.

"Yeah it was amazing. If you ever have the cash for it I'd definitely recommend going. It was the experience of a life time." Jackie smirked and shrugged, before taking a drink of her lemonade. "Well that's assuming river gods are real. Also assuming that he was there, and assuming he would be willing to talk to a shutterbug like me."
She smiled at him teasingly after her comment. She wasn't sure why but she was beginning to enjoy his company. __________________________________________
Nathan stood at the bar and listened to the two discussing as he continued working on his drink and scanned the crowd for people he could approach without forcing himself into an awkward situation. Then his eyes lit upon her, and his mouth practically watered. She would make such a nice full meal. However he knew she was probably matched with someone else, but it definitely wouldn't hurt to chat her up. Maybe if she survived he could contact her later...
Nathan ordered a two glasses of ice water and strode out towards her. "Hello, I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of ordering you a drink. You look flushed." He paused and set them on a nearby table. "Of course if you don't trust me you could always use it to wet a cloth and cool down that way. I hope you don't mind. It's pretty impressive how well you carry yourself."

Bek decides not to mention that the trip would likely be the last experience of his lifetime - going too long outside his river would finish him as surely as his gut finished curvaceous redheads like this one. A month would definitely be the end of him; the colors would begin leaching out of his body, and then... he would die.
He shakes the thought, with some effort. "I don't have the self-control to save very much," he ventures instead. "The simple pleasures are usually sufficient for me." He gets another glass of water - why not? - and meet's Jackie's gaze. His eyes are yellow and slitted, but surely she's seen stranger by now. "Now, this river-god. I bet he'd be willing to talk - I just don't know if he'd let you go afterward. But like you said, 'experience of a lifetime,' right?" He winks, enjoying her company as much as she enjoyed his.

"Please," Brand snorted. "I have eyes. I fought you. I felt the strength you put behind your blows and the power of your weapon. I have ears. I listened to your words. I have been in a similar place in my life a few times. Something is driving you, something terrible."
He swung her about in a quick twirl then pulled her in closer so she could hear her lowered voice.
"Perhaps I could help in some way."

The pregnant woman looked over the much younger man and smiled. "Oh my. Such a gentleman." She cooed as Beatrix took the offered water without hesitation. She gave it a small sip. She hadn't been very thirsty, but she wasn't about to turn down the offer either. You could never have to much water. "And thank you. The trick is pretending I don't feel like a hippo." She chuckled as she placed a hand on top her gravid swell. "Which is what I'm dreading will show up on the ultra sound. At the rate I've been growing I've been afraid I've picked up more hitch hikers than I'd assumed." She said as she took another sip as she looked over his outfit.
"And what are you supposed to be, might I ask? I haven't actually been to one of these things before. It seems very... Colorful. I'm impressed how thoroughly people have gotten into costume." She said as she turned her head to take in his details. He was cute, but young. He looked like he was only a few years out of high school. She let a small frown slip, but quickly corrected it. Have some shame, Beatrix. You don't need to cougar out on the first boy who hands you a drink. That's how you wound up like this in the first place. Not that he could have had any interest in her anyways. After all, he was just a polite boy offering a mother to be a glass of water.

"Well if you prefer the simple pleasures, then why do you have trouble saving money?" She smirked as she took another drink of her lemonade and looked into his eyes unflinchingly. "Those are some pretty high quality contacts you got there. She commented right before he started teasing her about the river god story. She wasn't certain why he was so fixated on it, but she enjoyed the captive audience.
Jackie chuckled. "I suppose so, but if that happened, then you wouldn't have the picture you just bought. With the experience of seeing the temples and the river, just feeling the weight of history on the place. It was amazing." _______________________________________________________
Artemis nodded, glad that she hadn't been betrayed by Kino, but upset at herself for failing at keeping her intentions truly hidden. She lowered her own voice as it grew cold and hard. Why was she even talking with him?! He was the enemy, even if he was so amiable.
"No. I don't think you can help. In fact I think we might have opposing purposes." _______________________________________________________
Nathan grinned as he saw her accept the water. So his natural charm had overcome the potential creepiness of his unexpected offer. "Why thank you. I do my best." He gave a small bow before taking a drink of his own water. "And what is wrong with hippos?" He asked teasingly, "They're both adorable and majestic creatures." He smirked charmingly. "And to be fair I wouldn't blame any extra hitchhikers you pick up. After all you look like you're one hell of a ride."
Nathan let his face become a bit of a leer for a couple of seconds before she asked her question. "Ah I'm one of the Fair Folk, milady. A simple enough costume to throw together and one easily suited to formal occasions. After all, I only needed some lights in the suit to convey the sense of magic and otherness. What do you think?" He asked with a roguish grin as he took another sip. She was definitely worth getting to know. Well at least she seemed somewhat witty, not to mention her smoking body.

"Simple doesn't always equate to cheap," says Bek with a nod. "Like these lenses."
When she mentions the picture again, he smiles widely. "I'm glad to have met you - your gallery shall serve me as a window to older times and other places."
His catcher's mitt of a hand moves from his glass of water, wiping off the moisture on his jacket. He then lays his hand over Jackie's. "Another comfort that seldom comes cheap," Bek says, "giving aid to fledgling artists. Do you take commissions? I might want more than just the one photo."

That tears it, Brand thought. She knows.
So now what? Lure her away and devour her himself for the sake of the Event? Report her? Turn her in to the organizers?
But if there was one thing he didn't like it was a story that stopped in the middle. This girl had an ongoing story--complete with a villain, he suspected. Maybe it was a tale of revenge she was living, or perhaps one of love. All her heart, all her drive would be wasted if he spoiled it. He was intrigued and interested, and he wanted to see how this all played out.
"I won't turn you in," Brand said quietly. "And as long as we don't work at direct cross-purposes you have my word as a knight that I won't stop you. You interest me, Lady Artemis, as does your story.I would like to know more of your tale. As a witness, perhaps, if not an actor in your tale. That being said, the organizers are also aware of you and may take action against you."

Beatrix snorted as she almost choked on her water at his comments. She composed herself as she pursed her lips with a soft blush, trying to keep herself from smiling or laughing. "That!" She huffed, "Is not something that you should be saying to a pregnant woman." She pouted, obviously flattered but not wanting to admit it. "And as adorable as you find hippos, feeling majestic while being one takes a lot of effort." She said with a relaxed sigh. "And oh really? A fairy? Let me guess, you're a thousand years old or something? That's why you go around flirting with older women?" She teased. It was hard not to notice his eyes roving over her body. She smiled inwardly to herself. Even when she felt like a whale she still had it. That was a confidence boost she was going to hold onto. "But it's pretty nice. I've never done anything with lights in anything I've made. Finding a reliable power source seems like it would be the biggest issue. And it would be a tad impractical, but it is rather eye catching." She would ramble as she looked over his outfit again. "I just rented my dress. Normally I would have made my own, but my proportions are a bit frustrating to work with. Measuring myself like this is definitely not motivational." She chuckled as her boldness grew. "And it's entertainingly been making rides much more difficult to manage, as it were." She teased with a sultry if ironic grin. She would normally have had a few drinks before she started talking like this.

Jackie nodded when he mentioned his lenses. "True I guess." However his comments made her blush. Especially the ones directed at praising her. "Thank you, I'm glad to be of help. And I do take a commission every so often, obviously photos are much cheaper than paintings." ________________________________________________ Artemis frowned as she heard his small speech. "Well whether or not we work at cross purposes depends entirely on yourself.' She smiled briefly at him. "I doubt you'd like to hear my tale. It isn't necessarily a happy one. But if you wish I can convey it to you." She smirked a bit. Well it seems as if you already made yourself a part of my quest in one capacity or another Sir Brand. And might I ask what exactly you know about the organizers and their plots?" The song changed to a more up tempo swing beat and Artemis took the opportunity to take control of the dance leading the gallant night in a freestyle swing/twist mashup. ______________________________________ Nathan smirked at her reaction, his eyes sparkling mischievously at her reaction to his hippo comment. "Oh I don't know. By the mirth you're trying to suppress I'd say my comments did what they're supposed to do. Well at least you seem to pull it off flawlessly." He saluted her with his glass and took another swallow. "Do I have to be older to appreciate the company of a more experienced woman? Is there a law against it? Perhaps I should turn myself in?" He grinned teasing her back. "Perhaps I'm after your first born. Fae are notorious for such deals after all." Her praise of his "costume" warmed his heart though he didn't actually do much other than pay for the tux. "Want to know how I did it?" He asked conspiratorially as he kept an eye on her drink level. After all a gentlemen would get her a refill without her needing to ask, and he was a gentleman to the core. "Well it is definitely a well done piece. I hope you gave whoever helped you pick it a big tip. As for rides, perhaps I could give you one after the dance?" He winked at her. If she wanted to flirt then flirt he shall.

"Heh, maybe it is against the law. Trying to pick up desperate looking single mothers is something that can be abused all to easily. Especially when it comes to a charmer like you." She teased back, subtly hinting that she certainly wasn't wearing any rings. "As for my first born, you can have it if you want it badly enough." She jokingly promised. After all, finding a guy to take care of her kids would be a dream. Of course, she had just met him. And he was so young. She was simply enjoying the attention.
Beatrix gave him a firm slap on the shoulder. "Okay, now you're pushing it. I don't start fucking a guy after just a few drinks!" She lied as she pouted. But all those times were due to altered mental states. This water certainly wasn't getting her drunk enough to just run off and fuck this handsome charming stud who had fallen into her lap. "Besides, a dance would be... Exhausting. I doubt I would be much of a lay then." she said as she stuck her tongue out.

Nathan grinned and winked at the compliment. "Well we all have our talents, apparently yours is natural allure. And I resent the implication that I would do anything even appearing like abuse." Nathan smiled to show he was purposely misunderstanding the context of her phrase. "And as for your first born, perhaps I shall decline. After all I'm not exactly fond of changing all those diapers by myself."
He gave a yell of surprise and mock pain. "And I'm not suggesting that exactly. I was merely pointing out that we could have quite a bit of fun together. And I doubt I'd be ungentlemanly enough to drag you onto the dance floor. Though I have a feeling you'd be an amazing lay whether you take it slow and easy, or at an increased tempo." He flashed her a grin as he parried her objection. "Beauty and wit all in the same woman. How did I get so lucky?"

"Still, a painting might be worth the expense, since there are limits to the fantasy one can create with props and makeup. Ah, but first, of course, your picture. Let me squeeze into my jacket."
It is actually far less of a squeeze than it had been earlier, but Bek nonetheless makes donning it look appropriately difficult. Black nails flick at buttons until they are in place, tug at cuffs, and straighten a sharp tie. "Now, move me as you will, Miss Jackie."

"Well if you could lean against the bar, and get a refill so you're holding a full glass, I'd really appreciate it. However I'm going to assume you want a less sophisticated pose for your commission." She moved various glasses around, getting the scenery just right.
"As for your commission, I need to know exactly what you want so I can quote you a price."

The crocodile-spirit briefly considers using the premise of a commission to get Jackie to miss the Main Event - he could take her back to his river, have her paint something scenic there, and devour her at his leisure afterward.
However, as much as he was enticed by Jackie, he didn't even know the number she'd been given - if she wasn't his, it would be pretty rude of him to deprive some monster of his meal. Especially considering that, as a spirit, Bek would not starve.
Additionally, well, he didn't want to miss the Main Event, either.
So Bek thinks of what else he might ask of her, as he tops off his water.
"I think, actually, I will just get some photos. Though, if I might askā¦? I'd like a couple of you." His skin flushes and darkens.
